London,!..
It has come to the knowledge of my Committee that the old established German firm of Kesars. m.leyerink & Co. at Shanghai has been sold to a Chinese syndicate the principal of which is the former Compradore of the firm.
The Syndicate has taken over the entire business including the German staff and is advising suppliers in kanchester and elsewhere that all outstanding contracts have been transferred from the Fessrs. Deyerink. It is also understood that credits have been opened through Dutch banka to enable the goods to be financed.
Although no particulars regarding other verman firms in hanghai are to hand it is believed that many are employing similar methods and in some asses nominal heads of American or other neutral nationality have been appointed with the intention of providing a means whereby british suppliere may, if they wish, evade the letter of the recent proclamation against "rading with the Fnemy.
The British Ferchants of this Colony supported by my Committee cannot too strongly protest against such pro- ceedings and would urge you to take such steps as will in- fluence the Government to refuse to recognise these transfers El
1 am, dear Sir,
Yours faithfully,
(Sd)...
Acting Secretar
